ABB Invests in New Global Headquarters in Zurich: A Future-Ready Hub for Industrial Automation
Commitment to Zurich and Industrial Automation Growth
ABB has announced a CHF 80 million investment to build its new global headquarters in Zurich Oerlikon. This project highlights ABB’s dedication to Switzerland and its ambition to create modern workspaces for 500 employees. The headquarters will serve as a hub for industrial automation, PLC, DCS, and control systems innovation.
Heritage Meets Modern Factory Automation Design
The new headquarters will integrate ABB’s historic building with a contemporary extension designed by Christ & Gantenbein. The renovation respects heritage protection rules while adapting the site for modern factory automation needs. This blend of tradition and innovation reflects ABB’s long-standing role in electrification and automation.
Sustainable Construction and Smart Energy Solutions
ABB plans a six-story extension using wood composite construction for material efficiency. Moreover, photovoltaic systems and ABB’s intelligent control solutions will ensure low energy consumption. This approach demonstrates how industrial automation and smart building technologies can drive sustainability in corporate infrastructure.
Workspace Designed for Collaboration and Innovation
The headquarters will offer 10,800 square meters of workspace, including a cafeteria, exhibition area, auditorium, and fitness center. These facilities aim to foster collaboration across ABB’s divisions, from PLC engineering to DCS integration. As a result, employees will benefit from an inspiring environment that supports in ovation in control systems and factory automation.
Honoring History While Driving Future Automation
ABB CEO Morten Wierod emphasized the importance of honoring ABB’s industrial heritage while building for the future. Since the merger of BBC and Asea in 1988, Zurich has been ABB’s global headquarters. The new site continues this legacy, reinforcing ABB’s authority in industrial automation and electrification.
Urban Development and Industrial Synergy
Zurich’s Mayor Corine Mauch welcomed ABB’s investment, noting its role in shaping a vibrant district north of Oerlikon station. The area will combine historic industrial buildings with modern structures, aligning with ABB’s vision of sustainable urban development. This synergy between city planning and factory automation reflects broader industry trends.
Timeline and Strategic Planning
Detailed architectural design will begin in 2026/2027, with construction starting soon after. ABB expects to move into the new headquarters by 2031. Until then, operations will continue at the Cityport building. This long-term planning ensures continuity in ABB’s industrial automation leadership.
