Honeywell and Dangote Aim to Double Refinery Output with Advanced Industrial Automation
Expanding Refinery Capacity with Control Systems
Honeywell announced a strategic collaboration with Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE to double production at Africa’s largest refinery in Lekki, Nigeria. The refinery plans to increase capacity from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2028. This expansion leverages advanced industrial automation, including PLC and DCS technologies, to optimize throughput and efficiency.
Leveraging Factory Automation for Energy Independence
Dangote will integrate Honeywell’s refining and petrochemical processing solutions to reduce costs and improve operational performance. By applying factory automation and control systems, the refinery can process a wider range of crude types. As a result, Nigeria will strengthen domestic fuel production, reduce reliance on imports, and enhance regional energy security.
Industrial Automation Driving Global Leadership
With the planned expansion, Dangote’s facility will become the world’s largest petroleum refinery. Honeywell’s automation technologies, combined with proprietary catalysts, will maximize existing infrastructure and accelerate project timelines. This approach reflects a broader industry trend: automation and control systems are now central to scaling global energy operations.
Honeywell’s Proven Expertise in Process Control
Honeywell has supported Dangote’s refinery for nearly a decade, providing process technology and automation solutions. Its DCS platforms and advanced catalysts are licensed to more than 6,000 refineries worldwide. This track record demonstrates Honeywell’s authority in industrial automation and its ability to deliver scalable, reliable solutions for complex energy projects.
Oleflex Technology and Petrochemical Growth
In addition to refining, Dangote will license Honeywell’s Oleflex technology, which converts propane into propylene. This process will enable production of 750,000 metric tons of propylene annually. Consequently, Dangote’s polypropylene output will rise to 2.4 million metric tons per year, supporting industries such as packaging and plastics manufacturing.
